Final Exam
How do you give a deliberative speech? Well there are two parts to it. First you have to choose a topic, and take a side on the issue. You can do this by looking at social judment theory that puts different shools of thought on a certain issue. Look at my groups Blog for an example.
social judgement theory Next you have to write it, then you have to deliever it. Writing a speech is like writing an essay is some ways. You have to establish a clear arguement, look at how others have interpreted the issue at hand, and back it up with evidence. On the other hand, a deliberative speech should contain somethings that an essay does not. One thing you could put into a speech are rhetorical figures of speech. For example, one figure is epizeuxis. This is the repetition of one word with not others in between to prove a point. For example, practice, practice, practice is the only way to get to Carnegie Hall. For other figures click on this link.
figures of speech Another way to form a delibrative speech is decide one kind of rhetoric to use. There are three school, Ethos (using ethics, right or wrong), Logos (using logic), and Pathos (Using emotions). For more information on this, click on the link.
Ethos, Logos, Pathos The most important thing to remember when writing a speech on the whole, is always keep it in your mind that it will be read allowed to many people.
I feel that I have more experience on delivering speeches because I was the speeker for my group. You need to remeber to use good controll of your voice. Project your voice to be heard, speek slowly to aviod stumbling on words, use meaningful and controlled gestures, and prcatice eye contact with the audience. For more details on this, click on this link.
speech delivery These things are all very important to keep in mind, but you can take care of all these things if you do two things through out your speech. Sam Bortz hits it right on the nose in the very beginning of his response. This is to have fun.
Sam's response If you think about having fun, you will enjoy delivering a speech. It should not be a chore, and if it is the audience will pick it up right away. The other very important thing is exude confidence. You have a lot of people listening to you, so act like it. With confidence you will earn your audiences respect. If you have fun and excude confidence, then issue like volume and voice controll, gestures, eye contact and so on, will fall into place. Given a deliberative speech can be an awesome experience, so treat it like one.
Dave, thanks for showing me how to blogg. This is only the second new title (I HAVE BLOGGED A LOT, I just added to my first thing, and wrote in the date myself). I still got the point though and enjoyed it. Thanks again for the nice compliments on my delivery and I hope you end up some place that does not remind you of OHIO.

What up. Hope everone was happy about there grades on their speeches. See you all on monday, hope you had a good weekend
4/25/04 Last Week
I'm running out of things to blogg about, but being its the last week of classes, I thought I would encourage under classmen to stay for sr. week. I know it is "illegal" to do here, but if you have a lot of sr. firends you should find a way.

4/18/04 speech day
Were giving our speeches on monday, so here is a site to look at that maybe could give some good advice

4/13/04 Kevin Bacon
During a meeting today, the actor from taxi, Jud Hirsch, came into our conversation. I named a couple of movies he was in and confessed to Dr. Gilbert that I'm kind of Movie "dork". He asked if you could link him to Kevin Bacon. As I was leaving I said, Jud Hirsch was in "Ordinary People" with Donald Sutherland, whole was in "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman, who as in "Rain Man" with Tom Cruise, who was in "A Few Good Men" with Kevin Bacon. Thats a game I've played on long car trips for years, so its pretty touch to stump me.
4/6/04 Frozen Four
I know it seems like all I blog about is hockey, so I'm doing it again. The frozen four is on today (thursday) on espn2. If you are the smallest hockey fan, you will still enjoy it. Its actually faster than the NHL in some respects becuase college games do not have that big emphasis on defense. Check it out on TV and at this site

4/5/04
Still a little behind on my posting, but trying to do better. Anyways I did not find it as hard to incorperate by figures of speech in the speech my group wrote. Some were there before I knew it.
On another note, today marks the first day of the NHL playoffs. YOu should realy check out some of the stuff by clicking on the link below for in-depth analysis

3/30/04
I've been a little behind on my posts. I've had a lot of sr. research to deal with. However my group posted out speech on our group blog so go ahead and cheack in out.
3/24/04 God
I agree with what Gilbert said about religeon in our country. I think the contriversey comes with how complex the issue that God is attached to. If an issue is not contriversial, it is easy to say that God is on our side becuase this will not upset many people.
3/22/04 Spring Break
I had a good spring break. I went home to New York. I went to the St. Patty's day parade, or at least was in the city and saw most it on tv. It was cool, went bar-hopping for about 12 hours, spent a lot of money and was pretty intoxicated. I just love how everybody becomes a little bit more Irish on that day as an excuse to get drunk
MAJOR CHANGE
I decided that it was kind of stupid to continually post my new posts at the bottum of the page. So now they'll be at the top
Speech Figures (3/12/04)
Antitrophe
"Had we failed to act, Security Council Resolutions on Iraq would have be revealed as empty threats... Iraq's torture chambers would still be filled with victims... The killing fields of Iraq... would still only be known to killers".
Antithesis
“By bringing hope to the oppressed, and delivering justice to the violent"
Contrarium
"we can turn back the dangerous illusion that terrorist do not exist"
Contrast
"By bringing hope to the oppressed and delivering justice to the violent”
Conversio
"America has sought 'support' for opperations in Afganistan and Iraq, and we have gained much 'support'"
Procaptalepsis
I found this not so much in a specific sentence, but in two paragraphs or series of sentences. The first when Bush is refering to the Patriot Act's renewal, and the other is in the paragraph that starts out, "I know some people question if America is really in a war at all"
These were the only ones I could find. A lot of times, my words had to do with the pronunciation. Because I could only read the speech, I could not tell if audible figures of speech were evident. In other cases, I simply could not find them.
My name is Bennett Robert Stapleton, but everyone knows me as Ben. My Mom wanted to call me Ben, yet she did not like the name Benjamin, so that is why I'm Bennett. I was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts, but moved to Bronxville, New York. I like living in New York because I'm so close to the city, but I'm still a fan of Boston teams.
I went to a boarding school in the Northeast part of Connecticut called the Pomfret School. I played Soccer, Hockey, and lacrosse in Highshcool. Currently I'm a senior at Denison. I major in History and minor in Political Science. I'm doing senior research on the Palestinian Israeli conflict and I'm working pretty hard on it. I also like to party a lot. My GPA is 3.25, and next year I will work on a bond-trading desk for a financial services firm in midtown called KBW. I'm looking forward to this class and hope to have a wonderful last semester at Denison
As I mentioned, I played Hockey in Highschool. I also follow pro Hockey. My favorite team is the Boston Bruins, and my favorite player is Joe Thorton currently, and my favorite Bruin of all time is Ray Bourque.

Yesterday, while adding the names to my newschannel, I got to see some of the names people came up with for their blogs. I felt my name was kind of boring and wish it was clever like some of the other ones. My favorite name was Ramanan's name, enititled "Blog Me!".
Blog Me!
Me too (2/3/04)
I realized that I have not been making titles for my new posts or put the date in, but I will do that from now on. I read Bortz's blog because he is a friend of mine. I noticed the he has a lot of work. I do to becuase I have to have 10 more pages of my senior research done. Senior research is work, not reading assignments for class. Maybe once I have my meeting done I will post some jokes or something more provacative then pissing and moaning about my work.

Nintendo is not for Losers (2/4/04)
I missed class today becuase I had a call I had to take from a potential employer. So, I looked through some posts to find some information about todays class. In doing this, I saw that Scott Towler wrote about playing Nintendo, and how it could potentially lead to people thinking he was a "loser". I also still play Nintendo and feel that anyone that does, is not a loser. To be more clear, anyone in out generation. A good part of my generation were raised by Mario and the Princess. Thus, anyone that plays Nintendo is re-visiting their past, and even their second parents. Keep pushing those buttons Scott, and try to avoid hand cramps.
Scott plays NES too
Badalice (2/4/04)
I saw this girl's name and had to see what she was about. First off all, she looks like a pornstar, but thats not really analyzing her personal add. Personally, this girl has the same chance as getting a date with me as a one-legged man has winning an ass-kicking contest. She has some qualities that seem cool that make her seem like she would be fun to be around. However, she refers to herself as a "literature slut". I see this as going out of her way to describe herself as a sure thing with out saying it outright. Also, she said her most humbling moment was being hit on by a transvestite at a fetish bar. This is not humbling, she is trying to let people know she goes to fetish bars. I have no problem with people that go to fetish bar, or have fetishes, I just don't nee any part of it. You should at least look at her becuase she does have a bit of sex apeal.

Should We Talk About the Weather (2/5/04)
I'm sick of Ohio weather. I've experienced 4 winters here and enough is enough. The sun will not shine until April.
On a better note, I want you to know how cool this assignment has been looking and analyzing personal ads (aka, ripping on people I don't know). I was looking for someone else that wrote on the same princess I wrote about. It did not take long. The first person on the list wrote about her.

Janet Jackson (2/9/04)
I enjoyed our discusion a great deal today in class about Janet's nudity and sexuality in society in general. I thought I would offer some concluding thoughts. Sex sells in our society. For instance, look at the Dallas Cowboy cherrleaders. They are not essential to cheer the team on, they are there becuase they have skin tight outfits and people want to look at them. No matter whether it is admited or not, the overwhelming majority of our society is interested and sex. Look at how much attention 5 seconds worth of unexpected nudity will get. The reason there was such an uproar is because it was unexpected, but not accidental. The amount of time spent on it just shows how much we are drawn to sexuality. Allison also wrote about this discussion.

My group is going to meet today to talk about the personel ad today. I'm not sure excatly what to do but Greg Haar has an ad up on his blog. I'm not sure if it is his or made up

Homesexuals Adopting Kids (2/11/04)
The debate over whether homosexuals should be allowed to wed, is a hottly contested topic. However, I feel that whether they should be able to adopt children, is even more contriversial. My first reaction to this is that it is unfair to the child becuase our society is too rough on something like this. However, this got me thinking. The reason why it would be so hard for a child two have two parents of the same sex is becuase society is not comfortable with it. Thus, we have to allow such things to happen, so that our society becomes more comfortable with this phenomonon. I think topics revolving around homosexuals are the most interesting and contriversial of any topics. Seth also writes about homosexuality in his blog.

Tired (2/12/04)
I'm going to bed, but my group has had our group blog done since monday. Ivan set it up and has so go to his blog for more information.

Other three spech figures (2/15/04)
I was unaware that we had to do three more figures of speech, so I'm do that now. My three the second time around were contarium (Implying the answer the a question by stating the opposing position), contrast (the use of opposites), and conversio (repetition of a word at the end of succesive clauses). I found contrarium in a couple of places. One notable place is Bush states, "we can turn back the dangerous illusion that terrorist do not exist" and "we can turn back to old policies and old divisions. I found contrast a lot in the speech. One thing that stuck me is that all the antithesis' I found had contrast. For example "By bringing hope to the oppressed and delivering justice to the violent. Conversio was the hardest figure to find during in the speech. I did find it in one place, "America has sought 'support' for opperations in Afganistan and Iraq, and we have gained much 'support'"
We are also suppose to list all the terms we had and define them and even though this was done in my two posts, here they are
Anitisthecon- A change in pronciation of a word
Anititrophe- Repetition of the same word
Antithesis- Words that contrast eachother that give ballance to a phrase
Contraium- Implying the answer to a question by stating the opposing postion
Contast- The use of oppisites
Conversio- Repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses
Tough Week (2/16/04)
I'm having a serenade with my girlfriend on friday night. What this means is I have a week long batchelor party where my friends take me out and get me drunk. It will be interesting to see if I make it to class or how my state will be if I do. Christine is a good friend of my girlfriends, so she'll be going through a similar situation

Social Judgment Thoery (2/17/04)
First of all, day one of my tank week was fun. A bunch of my buddies and myself went into Columbus. The subject at hand for next class however is social judgement theory. Our topic for out speech is "oil drilling in Alaska". For this post however, I will broaden the subject to oil drilling in genral. I can really only think of four positions (partly becuase I'm unfamiliar with the subject, but also it does not seem to be as hotly contested as abortion). On the two extremes you have people who support oil drilling no matter what the cosequences are, and on the other side you have people agianst oil drilling no matter how necessary it may seem. In the middle you have a side leaning towards the support side that would think it should be limited at times. Also in the middle, but leaning towards the against side, are people that would only support oil drilling in a time of crises, like the oil embargos in the 1973 and 79.
Recap (2/22/04)
It has been a while since I posted (Ithink since Tuesday). This is because I had more to drink this week than I have had in most months. This was becuase of my serenade. My friends killed me. Although this will not make up for missing all the post oppertunities, I will give you a recap of the week to so maybe you could have a laugh. On Monday night, we went into Columbus ( by we and I mean my tank team of about 15 guys). The highlight of Monday was finishing a cocktail that was "Wild Turkey" and 151 mixed in a tall cocktail glass. I finished it, vomiting in the trash can, turned the trash can upside down, and sat on top of the trash can. On Tuesday night, we partied with my girlfriends tank team. That was fun, but I cannot think of any specific funny things that happened except for playing survivor flip cup. Basically I was left as the the sole survivor on my team having to drink all the people's drinks that were voted off. Wenesday was also a great eveing. Aside from drinking a "Mexican Chicken" shot (Wild Turkey and Tabasco Suace), I also sang "Knocking on Heaven's Door" Axl Rose style with a stuffed toy of Erine from Seseme Street hanging out of the top of my shirt. One Thursday night we went to a strip club in Newark, and I got a lap dance from a married women. It reminded of us the "slut" conversation we had in class. Friday night was the big night. My Tank team went out on the quad dressed like ghosts with four other members spraying them with makeshift proton packs while being dressed as the 4 ghostbusters. I came out as the finale dressed in an authentic stay puft Marhmellow man costom.
The night was a success although the week killed me. See you in class Monday at 9:30, chipper as a daisy
Hope everyone is doing well. I was thinking about where I live and saw that someone else in the class is from New York. Because I'm going to do the speeking for my group will be talking to my represenative. Got lots of make up work, and good for Kai for being from New York.

I've been having a hell of a time talking with Nita. Those Congresswomen are just hard to tract down. However, I did find a good site that lets you know how someone voted, explains why, and how they stand on major issures

Gay Marriage Amendment (2/25/04)
Today's disscusion made me think of how unconstitutional the amendement that George W is proposing. The reason I say this is becuase it sounds like it is an amendment based on religion. We live in a secular state, so there is no way that this amendement will pass. Although Bush would not mind this to be an amendment, I think he knows it won't pass. It seems to me like a political stunt.
Speeking of potential stupid things our government is doing, if you think exploration in outerspace is worthless, check at Greg's blog.

2/29/04 Oscars
Today is a special day for all those that like movies. This is because the Oscars are on. I enjoy about half of the Oscars. I'm not into many of the catagories, and some of the perfermances I'd rather mute. Either way, I don't miss then becaue I love the movies, and I love competition. The Oscars are about to start shortly. Here is the homepage that has all the nominees... enjoy

My group is doing cencorship in television. Were still working out the kinks of our legislation, but I know this is a subject that the class spent some time debating. If you want, I have provided a link to the FCC homepage. Go ahead and look at it if you want to see so more information on the subject outside what we did in class.
